Since 1904, four generations of the Thatcher family have been making cider at Myrtle Farm, in Sandford, Somerset.

Thatchers passion for quality has led to an unrivalled range of premium ciders, with its deep knowledge of apple varieties resulting in innovative ciders that are full of flavour and with a distinct character that reflects English cidermaking at its best. Its ciders include flagship brand Thatchers Gold, Thatchers Haze, Thatchers Vintage and Thatchers Katy.

Martin Thatcher feels strongly about supporting Somerset Day “After all what would Somerset be without cider? We’re a Somerset company through and through. My family has lived in the county for generations, and celebrating Somerset is what we do every day of our lives through our orchards, which are such a stunning part of our local environment, to the cider we make. For us, Somerset Day is all about coming together with friends and family, in our community, and celebrating this fantastic area we live and work in.”

Pyne’s of Somerset has become a destination for food shoppers from across three counties, some of them regularly driving 40 miles to get there.

It’s sited just off the M5 at North Petherton where Malcolm and Julie Pyne relocated from the village centre in 2011.

The business has grown hugely since but the fundamentals remain unchanged: meat is from locally-raised livestock which, says Malcolm Pyne, means customers are guaranteed unmatchable quality, whether buying prime cuts or his national award-winning sausages and burgers.

Pyne’s also offers fresh fish, a delicatessen counter, speciality regional products, Somerset ciders and a hot food takeaway.

Somerset Council came into being on April 1 2023. The new unitary council brings together the services previously provided by the four district councils in Somerset (Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset) alongside the services provided by Somerset County Council.

The new Council continues to work alongside the existing town and parish councils and their role is enhanced through new Local Community Networks.

Somerset Council combines the strengths of the five authorities and provides a single clear voice for Somerset nationally and internationally. It gives clearer public accountability for services in the county and simpler access to them.

The Leveller® was launched in 2010 and has grown rapidly to become Somerset’s largest circulation newspaper. The paper has challenged the expectations set by our local press with newspapers that are not full of pictures, that contain actual news and that attempts to hold politicians and those in authority to account.

The philosophy behind the Leveller® is that newspapers should be about building communities. That means bringing communities together through our work. It means providing a platform of trust between our readers and our advertisers. Something that social media simply cannot do. We believe in a bright future for newspapers.

Coates English Willow Visitor Centre is the home of P. H. Coate & Son, founded by willow grower and merchant Robert Coate in 1819, and still run by the Coate family today.

The Somerset Levels is the most important wetland area in the U.K. This unique landscape provides the perfect conditions for willow growing.

Basket making willow, known as “Withies”, has been grown here for two centuries, and it is now the only area left where it is still cultivated for the production of baskets, furniture, garden items and high-quality artists’ charcoal.

Here indeed is the heart of the English willow industry, an industry that in many ways has not changed for centuries
