Bring the Somerset Dragon into your classroom

Bring the magic of The Tail of The Somerset Dragon into your classroom with activities and resources created to help children explore Somerset’s places, stories, nature and identity.

As part of The Journey of the Somerset Dragon, schools can follow the dragon’s travels across the county, use the story to spark creative learning, and get involved in a special naming campaign with BBC Radio Somerset. It’s a simple way to connect reading, local pride and classroom creativity, while giving children the chance to feel part of a county-wide Somerset story.

Name the Somerset Dragon

As part of Somerset Day, BBC Radio Somerset is inviting the public to help name the iconic dragon from the Somerset flag. It’s a chance to be part of the county’s story, with suggestions inspired by local history, folklore, and creativity. A shortlist will be selected by a judging panel before going to a public vote, with the winning name announced on air on Somerset Day.

The Journey of the Somerset Dragon

At the heart of this year’s celebrations is The Journey of the Somerset Dragon, a county-wide storytelling tour running throughout April and May.

The Dragon will travel across Somerset, appearing in Wells, Minehead, Evercreech, Weston-super-Mare, Sparkford, Watchet, Street, Somerton, Nailsea and more, bringing families together for live interactive readings of The Tail of The Somerset Dragon and celebrations at each stop.

And this year, the story belongs to Somerset. Residents are invited to submit a name for the dragon, with the chosen name revealed as part of the Somerset Day celebrations.
